Turkish Style Steak with Potatoes Puree (Patates püreli biftek) Recipe
Beef, lamb, goat, chicken and turkey are the meat available in local butchers and meat markets in Turkey very much. Actually, we and many Turks buy their all meats from our buthchers not markets. Because, they are mostly organic and we all know that 100% grass-fed beef or mutton, free-range organic chicken or turkey are sold in these butchers. However markets or big malls spread all around the country, we don't think that many butcher processes are not available in markets, such as; geting a range of high quality cuts, from ground beef to filet mignon, at an amazing value and shipping is always free, delivering to your door on your schedule, and cancelling anytime etc. Also we generally buy the wild-caught seafood from the fish shops.
In this post we are going to share "Turkish Style Steak with Potatoes Puree (Patates püreli biftek) Recipe" with you. How to Make Turkish Style Steak with Potatoes Puree (Patates püreli biftek)!
The meal in the plate above and below pictures was done in our kitchen, but you can find this meal in popular restaurants of Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul, Adana, Antalya cities alot. Recipe is not complicated and it is really easy.
For cooking steak: In this recipe we prepared steaks, potatoes puree and tomatoes - garlic sauce in different pots and we used T bone steak (our steaks were prepared by the our butcher and he removed bones from the steaks). If you want you can use strim steak, filet steak for this dish.
For potatoes puree: in this recipe we used our yellow potatoes (from Niğde city) for the puree. But if you want, you can use sweet potatoes or other kind of potatoes. Our potatoes are a nutrient dense root vegetable. We consume it alot in daily life. They always blend into a great creamy and smooth puree. Our potatoes are tasty enough to hold their own yet they are flexible enough to be able to play well with other vegetables and herbs so you can make countless combination purees with them and also they are so cheap and you can easy to find it at almost any market (gocery). They are so nutrients to help baby thrive–fiber, manganese, calcium, iron and vitamin A and C which help boost brain function, vision health and helps develop a strong immunity. Puree process is really very easy. Just put the boiled potatoes chunks with milk, butter and khashar cheese into pot and cook and mix them for a while.

Very good family favourite;
Serve: 4 servings, Preparation Time: 10-15 minutes, Cooking Time: 20-25 minutes, Cuisine: Mediterranean & Anatolian Cuisines,
For Preparation of Steak:
- 3 or 4 Beef Steaks, (it is optional, Fat trimmed or not),
- 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil,
- 1 Normal size onion, cut into halves,
- A pinch of salt and ground black pepper to taste,
For Potatoes Puree:
- 6 or 7 Normal size potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 cm (1/2-inch) cubes ,
- 1 Tablespoon Butter,
- 1/2 or 1 Cup of milk,
- 1/4 Cup Kashar cheese (cheddar cheese / a pale yellow cheese made of sheep's milk), grated,
- 1/2 Teaspoon Salt, ground black pepper and red pepper flakes,
For Tomato Sauce:

- 3 or 4 Cloves garlic, chopped roughly (or minced),
- 1/2 Teaspoon Salt, dried thyme flakes ground black pepper and red pepper flakes,
- 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil, (we used oil with which we fried the steaks),
- A cup of hot water,

- First of all, put your all ingredients on your work table. For Potatoes Puree: Put the potatoes in a medium saucepan and add enough water to cover (3 or more quarts) and then sprinkle the salt. Then, boil potatoes in salted water until soft. Then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are tender, it takes 12 to 15 minutes. Then drain the potatoes and again put your all potatoes chunks into saucepan and mash them with the blender well. Then add butter, grated cheddar cheese, milk, salt, ground black pepper and red pepper flakes over the mashed potatoes. Combine the butter, cheddar cheese, milk and other ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, and cook, stirring, until the butter melted and smooth. Now your potatoes puree is ready. Cover the keep warm.
- For Preparation of Steaks: Meanwhile, season the beef steak leans generously with a pinch of ground black pepper and salt. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Aproximately, cook for three or four minutes each sides of Beef Steak leans (until Steak lens turn to brown). Then set aside. Reserve the oil, because you can use it to tomatoes sauce.
- For Tomatoes Sauce: Pour your grated tomatoes into oil (reserved oil). Then add chopped garlic, tomato paste, salt, dried thyme flakes, ground black pepper and red pepper flakes and mix them well. Then pour the how water onto mixture and stir for a while (2-3 minutes).
- Then, place frying steaks and 2 pieces of onion into pressure cooker (We used onions, because they reduce the smell of meat in the dish). Then pour the tomatoes sauce over the meats. Cook it for about 20-25 minutes.
- Then, take a wide serving plate. Then place some of the potatoes pure and spread over the plate. Then put a steak over it and drizzle the tomatoes sauce over the steak and potatoes puree. Or Slice the steak and divide among plates along with the mashed potatoes.
- Turkish Rice dish (Pilaf-Recipe) goes well with this dish.

DeleteSounds like a comfort food lunch indeed! I don't eat dairy so I make my mash with the water in which the potatoes cooked instead of milk. I do prefer our yellow and red potatoes to American sweet potato which I use just for soups or something baked in the oven.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your comment dear friend! Yes your recipe is suitable for the vegan version of potatoes puree. I have not tried red potatoes so far. It doesnt grow here.
DeleteYou have them for sure, they're the same as the yellow ones, just a bit more pink and they are better for roasting, while yellow ones are better for boiling, mash and soups. That is their only difference :) We always have both sorts in the shops. They call the yellow ones Russet potatoes in English and red is also Red potato.
DeleteThanks for the information. I will check it out to big markets.
