Tea and coffee are indispensable elements of people's daily lives across the world, but they are best enjoyed with something sweet or salty on the side. According to dietitians; from sweet biscotti to savory muffins or delicious cookies to cakes, these snacks are the perfect bite to eat with a hot cup of tea or coffee.
Let's talk about the flavors that accompany tea or coffee in different cultures in many parts of the world. There are many different sweet snacks that people can consume sometimes instead of breakfast, or sometimes first elevenses or on the side of tea or coffee accompanying long conversations, are quite popular for a reason. Also add these snacks alongside a glass of milk, the kids love them too!
Generally, Turks consume tea more than the coffee. And they enjoy to eat something sweet snacks or salty snacks in their tea-breaks. Especially, we like to eat three yummy snacks for tea-breaks in winter times. First up is a Turkish Lentil Balls or Turkish Tabbouleh Salad (Kısır), the second is the soft and fragrant lemon cake, and the last is an irresistible Cocostar Cookies (Surprise Cookies).
In this post, we are going to share our very delicious cookie recipe with you. It has been very popular for couple of years in here. Its name Surprise cookies, it is also called Cocostar cookies. We are sure that when you try this recipe, you like these cookies with your tea or coffee.

How to Make Cocostar Cookies (Surprise Cookies)!
What is better than tea and coffee time? Here it is a healthy idea for tea and coffee snack to pair with you morning or afternoon cup. Cocostar Cookies (Surprise Cookies) are perfect companion to your coffee or tea. Nowadays, Cocostar - Surprise cookies are very popular among our friends and our neighbours. They are not difficult to make, but for some reasons many of the Cocostar - Surprise cookies efforts end in disaster (such as over-baked problem, soaked over syrup problem). But, we have made this cookies alot during the last 3-4 months and all results were perfect. So, we think that our recipe is a great tool to guide you. If you foĺowing our recipe step by step. You wil get a good result.
We haven't tried its vegan version yet, but many of our vegan friends use coconut milk, margarine and water instead of the milk, butter and egg white. Also if you want, you can melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler on request and pour onto cookies instead of the garnishing of nutmeg powder and crashed walnuts.
Recipe for Cocostar Cookies (Surprise Cookies)!

Here it is our Cocostar Cookies (Surprise Cookies)' recipe;
Serving: 6 Servings, Prepare time: Nearly 15-20 minutes, Cook time: 20-25 minutes, Cuisine: Mediterranean and Anatolian Cuisines,
Very good family favourite;
Ingredients : For Its Dough; 3 Cups of flour, |
Ingredients : For Its Dough; 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, |
Ingredients: For Its Dough; 1 tablespoon of yogurt, |
Ingredients : For Its Dough; 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, |
Ingredients : For Its Dough; 1 teaspoon of baking powder and vanilla, |
Ingredients : For Its Dough; 1 cup of unsalted butter, |
Ingredients : For Its Filling; 1/2 cup of nutmeg powder, |
Ingredients : For Its Filling; 2 eggs' white, egg yolks aren't used in this recipe, |
Ingredients : For Its Filling; 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, |
Ingredients : For Its Filling; 2 tablespoons of milk, |
Ingredients : For Its Syrup; 1 cup of milk, |
Ingredients : For Its Syrup; 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, |
Ingredients : For Its Garnishing; 1/2 cup of crashed walnuts, |
Ingredients : For Its Garnishing ; a pinch of Nutmeg powder for per serving plate, |
For dough: firstly put butter and powdered sugar into a deep bowl. Blend them by your hand, |
Then put yogurt into the bowl and blend them by your hand, |
Then add cocoa powder into the mixture and blend them by your hand, |
Then add baking powder, vanilla and flour little by little onto the mixture, |
Remold till you get a dough doesn't stick to your hands, |
Then leave to rest the dough for about 10 -15 minutes, |
For filling: put eggs' white and milk into the bowl and mix them, |
Then add granulated sugar into the mixture and mix them well, |
Then add nutmeg powder into the mixture and mix them with your hands well, |
Mix all of the ingredients well, |
Then take some tiny pieces and make it ball shape in your palm, |
Then let them for cooling in the refrigerator for a while (10-15 mins), |
Then take walnut size pieces from the dough, turn it round your hand. Put 1 nutmeg powder mixture into the dough, turn it off. Roll it in your hand, |
Meanwhile place the grease - proof paper into the baking tray, |
Then line your cookies up to the baking tray, |
Bake in the preheated 160-170°C (320-338°F) oven. Cook until 20 minutes, then get them from the oven and let them to cool, |
For syrup: place the milk and sugar in a medium size pot, |
Place the milk and sugar in a medium size pot, |
Cook the syrup ( sherbet ) mixture until the sugar melting or cook it for about 3-5 minutes, |
Then pour syrup onto the cookies, |
Pour syrup (sherbet) onto your cookies well. Please watch out the soaked over syrup problem, |
Lastly, sprinkle some crushed walnuts and nutmeg powder over the cookies and serve, |

For Its Dough:
- 3 Cups all-purpose flour, (Nearly 550 - 600 gr.),
- 2 Tablespons cocoa powder, (Nearly 50 gr.),
- 1 Tablespoon Yogurt,
- 1/2 Cup powdered sugar, (Nearly 100 gr.),
- 1 Teaspoon of baking powder, (nearly 10 gr),
- 1 Teaspoon of vanilla, (nearly 10 gr),
- 1 Cup unsalted butter, softened, (Nearly 200 gr.),
For Its Filling:
- 1/2 Cup Nutmeg powder, (Nearly 100 gr),
- 2 Normal size eggs' white, (we dont use egg yolks in this recipe),
- 2 Tablespoons Granulated sugar,
- 2 Tablespoons milk,
For Its Syrup (Sherbet):
- 1 Cup milk, (Nearly 200 ml),
- 1/2 Cup Granulated sugar, (Nearly 100 gr),
For Its Garnishing:
- 1/2 Cup walnuts, finely chopped or crashed,
- A pinch of Nutmeg powder for per serving plate,
Preparation:
- First of all, put your all ingredients on the work table. Then, put softened butter, powdered sugar, yogurt and cocoa powder into a deep bowl. Blend them by your hand. Then add baking powder, vanilla and flour little by little onto the mixture. Remold till you get a dough doesn't stick to your hands. Leave to rest the dough for about 10-15 minutes.
- On the other hand, put nutmeg powder, egg white, milk and granulated sugar into a bowl. Mix them with your hands well. Then, take some tiny pieces and make it ball shape in your palm and let them for cooling in the refrigerator for a while (10-15 minutes).
- Then put your cookie's dough on the work table and take walnut size pieces from the dough, turn it round your hand. Put 1 nutmeg powder mixture (or 1 teaspoon nutmeg powder mixture) into the dough, turn it off. Roll it in your hand. Line them up to the baking tray with grease - proof paper. Bake in the preheated 160-170°C (320-338°F) oven. Cook until 20 minutes. Then, get your cookies from the oven after cooking and leave them to cool.
- Meanwhile, prepare the syrup (sherbet) of cookies. First, place the milk and sugar in a medium size pot. Cook the syrup mixture until the sugar melting or cook it for about 3-5 minutes. Then, Pour onto cookies.
- Lastly, sprinkle some crushed walnuts and nutmeg powder over the cookies and serve.
