The part of yogurt in the lifestyle of the Turks is very different from abroad. We Turks consume yogurt from breakfast to dinner almost every day. Turkish people do not consume yogurt only for its sweet intentions. Yogurt is a food in itself. It is also eaten with meals. It goes well with the stuffed green bell peppers, and even yogurt goes well with the pasta too. In Turkey, yogurt is both the raw material of food and a food that beautifies food.

History of Yogurt!

Who discovered the yoghurt? Turks or Greeks?

Actually, this question's answer is very complicated. 

According to some historians, yogurt is believed to have been eaten as far back as 10,000 to 5,000BC. It is probable that the earliest yogurt was made by accident in region of Mesopotamia around 5,000 BC, when milk-producing animals were first domesticated. By 2,000 BC it is estimated that about half of the human population was accustomed to eating dairy products.

According to the some history books; Central Asia, Anatolian and Balkans are the homeland of yogurt. So that, in Turkey/Anatolian, yogurt holds an important place in the Turkish People's nutrition. Today, Yogurt has been a staple in Turkish, Greek, Arabic, Indian and Russian cuisine for centuries.

So, Who discovered the yoghurt?

The exact origins of yogurt are not definitively known, but it is believed to have been discovered independently by various cultures. Especially, Yogurt has been well known both communities of Turks and Greeks have a long history of yogurt consumption and production.

In Turkey, yogurt has been a staple of the cuisine for centuries, and it is often associated with Turkish cuisine. The word "yogurt" itself is of Turkish origin. Turkish people have a rich tradition of making and consuming yogurt in various forms.

On the other hand, yogurt has also been a significant part of Greek cuisine and culture for a long time. Especially, Greek yogurt, known for its thick and creamy texture, has gained popularity worldwide. It is commonly used in Greek dishes and desserts.

How to Make Creamy Homemade Yogurt!

If you want to make your own rich, healty, creamy and delicious "Homemade Yogurt" at home. But you thought that it was too difficult, because you have not made homemade Yogurt before. We just say as shortly; " it is not difficult at all". Well, homemade yogurt is surprisingly simple to make (not complicated). Also homemade yogurt is rediculously fun and cheap. We recommend it to everyone.

Basically, to make homemade yogurt at home, all you need is "yogurt starter/bacteria" (it is known as yogurt starter culture) and "milk". Maybe, learning how to make homemade yogurt at home is very easy with the our "Homemade Yogurt Recipe". 

Recipe for Creamy Homemade Yogurt!

Before the give recipe of homemade yogurt, we should keep in mind three points, while we make homemade yogurt; 

1- Heat up milk (this kills dangerous microbes in your milk)

2- Combine with a little bit of yogurt starter (yogurt starter culture/bacteria)

3- And let it sit in a warm spot until the milk turns to yogurt.

4- We recommend that to keep making your own homemade yogurt, save some of the last batch of yogurt. Because it help to start the next homemade yogurt.   

Yogurt is a food product obtained bye the fermentation of milk (Cow, sheep or goats milk). Generally, Homemade Yogurt Preparetion process takes 30 minutes and it is ready in 8-10 hours. Here is the our creamy homemade yogurt recipe;

Serve: 8-10 servings, Preparation Time: 10 minutes, Cooking Time: 40 - 45 minutes, Cuisine: Mediterranean / Anatolian Cuisines, 

Very good family favourite;

Ingredients: 5 liter Milk - nonfat or low fat milk,

Ingredients: 2 Tablespoons live culture yogurt -
Yogurt starter,

Ingredients: Couple of dried chickpeas for yogurt starter,

Preparation: Firstly pour milk into container or a large pot,

Then heat over medium or low level heat.
Don't forget to stir frequently to milk,
because this prevents milk burning,

Heat the milk to 180 °C (nearly 356 °F),

Then take off heat and let it cool to
110 - 116 °C (nearly 230 - 240 °F),

Then add the yogurt starter and dried chickpeas and mix well,

Then close yogurt container and place in oven,

We use oven method to create a warm environment
for making yogurt. So, turn on oven to 200 °C (nearly 392 °F)
 for about 5 mins. Then turn it off then keep your
yogurt container warm in it,

Let yogurt container sit for about 6-8 hours,
until thick cream is formed,

Then place the yogurt container in the refrigerator to cool,
 as the yogurt cool, it will get even thicker,

Now Creamy Homemade yogurt is ready. Enjoy!


Ingredients:

  • 5 liter Milk (Equal to amount of yogurt you want or 4 cups Nonfat or low fat milk)
  • Yogurt starter (2 table spoons live culture yogurt - it can be nonfat or low fat plain yogurt), 
  • Couple of dried chickpeas for yogurt starter, (we always use couple of dried chickpeas as a starter for making yogurt),

 

Preparetion:

  1. First of all, put your all ingredients on the work table. Firstly pour milk into container (or large pot) and heat over medium or low level heat. Don't forget to stir frequently to milk, because this prevents milk burning. Heat the milk to 180 °C (356 °F). 
  2. Then, take off heat and let it cool to 110-116 °C (nearly 230 -240 °F). Then add the yogurt starter and dried chickpeas and mix well. 
  3. Then, close yogurt container and place in oven (we use oven method to create a warm environment for making yogurt. First of all; turn on your oven on to 200 °C (nearly 392 °F) for about 5 minutes then turn it off then keep your yogurt container warm in your oven). 
  4. Let yogurt container sit for 6-8 hours, until thick cream is formed. Then, place the yogurt container in the refrigerator to cool, as the yogurt cool,  it will get even thicker, also you may keep yogurt up to 10-15 days in the refrigerator.
