Generally, the fruit of the chestnut ripens in October and November months. Then, Chestnuts carts are seen in the streets. Because, Turkish people love roasted chestnuts very very much. What about us? We love roasted chestnuts very much too! We were dying of roasted chestnuts. When we were children, we were looking forward to winter season coming very soon, because, when the winter came, we went to city center and bought a paper bag of roasted chestnuts from chestnut cart. Also, our moms made it at homes. Especially, roasted chestnuts were our favourite snack of Christmass days.          What is Turkish Chestnut (Roasted Turkish Chestnut)?


     Turkish sweet Chestnut is very unique and healty fruit. It grows throughout the temperate region of the northern side of Turkey. There are sixteen different Chestnut spicies in Anatolia. They are called as Turkish:"Kestane". Also our chestnuts are very famous throughout the Mediterranean and Europa and it is known that "Anatolia Chestnut/Anatolia Kestane". Our sweet Chestnut trees are found all along the Turkey's northern coast, and also they are found in the Northwest region as far as the region of Aegean. But, it is cultivated in the Marmara Sea Region and the Black Sea Region mainly in the mountainous areas. Our most famous chestnuts (Kestane) in Turkey is in the city of Bursa which is located the marmara region.          Chestnut is a popular winter snack and it is consumed so much in the cold winter times in Turkey. Also, It is mainly grown and consumed in the Mediterranean countries, plus: chestnuts are a major stable in many of the countries of Europe. According to historians; chestnuts dates back to pre-historic times. At that times, it was grown throughout the Anatolia. Especially, there were so many chestnut trees in the province of Bursa (Bursa City), and it was introduced to Greece in ancient times, spreading from there to Italy and other Mediterranean countries and European countries. 

         Our sweet and unique Anatolua Chestnuts are low in fat and calories, and have full of fiber, also, they realy are an energy rich and nutritious food containing starch, sucrose, protein and tannin, plus; they are rich in Potassium, Magnesium and Calcium. They are especially valuable for growing children.  
        

         How to Make Roasted Chestnuts?


         As we mentioned above of the this post; "Turkish sweet Chestnut is very unique and healty fruit." Our sweet chestnuts also go well with several meat dishes and ofcourse as a stuffing for turkeys at Christmass times (New Year times).          Today, we are going to share our ways of roasted chestnuts recipe to you. Maybe, these ways help that you can learn some of the tricks and tips on how to roast chestnuts at home.

         As we said before roasted chestnuts are the perfect healthy winter snack for everyone. When you buy chestnuts in your markets, groceries or Bazaar. Choose the fat ones as they will be more delicious when roasted (or grilled) (bye the way, if possible, try to choose Anatolia Chestnuts). Dont forget to soak the chestnuts in water for a while to get them to soften.

         Here it is our Roasted Chestnuts Recipe;

         Very good family favourite;

         Serving: 4 Servings,  Preparation Time: Nearly 5-10 minutes, Cooking Time: Nearly 30-35 minutes, Food Type: Snack and 100% Vegan food, Cuisine: Mediterranean & Anatolian Cuisines.

         Ingredients:

         - 1 kg Anatolia Chestnuts, (Choose fat ones and using a small knife, cut the shells horizantally on the top (fat) side or cut shells an X on the top (fat) side of each chestnut )

         Preparation:

         1. Way (Roasted Chestnuts in the oven);


       Roasting Chestnuts in the oven is really easy. First of all, soak your chestnuts (fat ones) in water for about 15-20 minutes to get them to soften. Then, take your all chestnuts (fat ones) and put them on the work-table. Using a small knife, cut the shells horizantally on the top (fat) side or cut shells an X on the top (fat) side of each chestnut (we cut our chestnut's shells an X on the top -fat- side of each chestnut in this recipe). Then, heat the your oven to 200°C (400°F/Gas 6.). Now time is roasting chestnuts. Place your chestnuts in an oven tray and put it on the middle rack. Turn your chestnuts over after 15 minutes and roast for another 10 minutes (or bake until the skins open and the insides are tender). Take them out and let them cool for about 10 minutes. Eat your chestnuts while still warm after removing the shells.

         (It is optional: if you want, after place your chestnuts in an oven tray, you can put water of bowl in the middle of the oven tray, Sothat, when your chestnuts are cooking, water's steam makes your chestnuts to soften. Then, Place your chestnuts in an oven tray and put it on the middle rack. Turn your chestnuts over after 15 minutes and roast for another 10 minutes (or bake until the skins open and the insides are tender). Take them out and let them cool for about 10 minutes.

         (It is optional: if you want, you can put your chestnuts inside of the oven bag and then roast them in the oven. For this way: Firstly, Take a normal size oven bag and then, with the tip of a small knife, poke a couple of tiny holes in the one side of the oven bag to let steam enter the inside of oven bag and makes your chestnuts to soften. Then place your chestnuts to inside of oven bag and roast them for about 30-35 minutes in the oven (or bake until the skins open and the insides are tender).          2. Way (Roasted Chestnuts in the Toast Machine);


       Roasting Chestnuts in the Toast Machine is really easy. First of all, soak your chestnuts (fat ones) in water for about 15-20 minutes to get them to soften. Then, take your all chestnuts (fat ones) and put them on the work-table. Using a small knife, cut the shells horizantally on the top (fat) side or cut shells an X on the top (fat) side of each chestnut (we cut our chestnut's shells an X on the top -fat- side of each chestnut in this recipe). Then, heat the your toast machine (or toasted oven) - turn your toast machine's heat level to 4 (by the way, our toast machine last level is 4, so you should turn your toast machine's level to last). Now time is roasting chestnuts. But, firstly sprinkle a little water (1/2 glass water) on tray of toast machine. Then, place your chestnuts in a toast machine tray. Turn your chestnuts over after 15 minutes and roast for another 10 minutes (or bake until the skins open and the insides are tender). Take them out and let them cool for about 10 minutes. Eat your chestnuts while still warm after removing the shells.

         3. Way (Roasted Chestnut in the Sauce Pan);


       Roasting Chestnuts in the Sauce Pan is another easy way. Like other ways, firstly, soak your chestnuts (fat ones) in water for about 40-50 minutes to get them to soften. Then, take your all chestnuts (fat ones) and put them on the work-table. Using a small knife, cut the shells horizantally on the top (fat) side or cut shells an X on the top (fat) side of each chestnut (we cut our chestnut's shells an X on the top -fat- side of each chestnut in this recipe). Then, sprinkle a little water (1/2 glass water) in to the sauce pan and heat your saucepan over a low (or medium) heat. Now time is roasting chestnuts. Place your chestnuts in to sauce pan. Turn your chestnuts over after 15 minutes and roast for another 10 minutes (or cook until the skins open and the insides are tender). Take them out and let them cool for about 10 minutes. Eat your chestnuts while still warm after removing the shells.

         4. Way (Roasted Chestnuts in the Deep Pot);


       Another easy way that Roasting Chestnuts in the Deep Pot. Like other ways, firstly, soak your chestnuts (fat ones) in water for about 40-50 minutes to get them to soften. Then, take your all chestnuts (fat ones) and put them on the work-table. Using a small knife, cut the shells horizantally on the top (fat) side or cut shells an X on the top (fat) side of each chestnut (we cut our chestnut's shells an X on the top -fat- side of each chestnut in this recipe). Then, take your deep pot and add half glass water in to the deep pot. And heat your deep pot over a low (or medium) heat. Now time is roasting chestnuts. Place your chestnuts in to sauce pan. Turn your chestnuts over after 15 minutes and roast for another 10 minutes until the water is absorbed. (or cook until the skins open and the insides are tender). Take them out and let them cool for about 10 minutes. Eat your chestnuts while still warm after removing the shells.

         5. Way (Roasted Chestnuts in the Microwave);


       Roasting Chestnuts in the Microwave is also easy way. First of all, soak your chestnuts (fat ones) in water for about 40-50 minutes to get them to soften. Then, take your all chestnuts (fat ones) and put them on the work-table. Using a small knife, cut the shells horizantally on the top (fat) side or cut shells an X on the top (fat) side of each chestnut (we cut our chestnut's shells an X on the top -fat- side of each chestnut in this recipe). Then, place your chestnuts on a microwave's safe plate, and microwave one-minute intervals, until the your chestnut's outer shell starts to peel back slightly where you made your score (it depends on your microwave, generally, it takes 3-4 minutes or nearly 7-8 minutes). By the way, be careful not to microwave chestnuts longer than you need to, or you will burn your chestnuts. If everything is ok with your chestnuts, they look tender and their skins open, take them out and let them cool for about 10 minutes. Eat your chestnuts while still warm after removing the shells.
